Females carry the marks, language and nuances of their culture more than the male. Anything that is desired or despised is always placed on the female body.

-Wangechi Mutu

The powerful artwork of Wangechi Mutu is saturated in meaning as well as  rich  colors and textures. Magazine cuttings along with other media images are cut and pasted together into ironic fantastical collages. The creatures  formed in her art sprout tentacles while bubbles frothe from their deeply dyed bodies. My collection is inspired by her shapes, lines and textures. The cyborg bodies, born of media images and cultural meaning which  inhabit her paintings, influenced the silhouettes of the collection. Patches of organza and beading are scattered throughout the collection, mirroring the translucent textures sometimes found in her collages. Hanging yarns  and long thin knitted ropes entangle the body in a manner that reflects the shapes of her artwork. The creatures in the paintings dress the female  form while fusing with it, thus bringing the female cyborg-ian creatures out of the canvas and onto the human body of the wearer.
